Mister Miracle by Tom King
5.0
2nd re-read (Nov. 2022): I mean... read the room
re-read (Dec. 2021): still slaps with a 5 stars
1st read (Sept. 2019): 5 stars
Trigger/content warnings: mental illness, attempted suicide, murder, past child abuse, and violence/gore.
A gut-wrenching, thoughtful read with moments of great sadness and hilarity mixed together to create an intriguing narrative that makes you question if you know anything. The art style and color palate were simply beautiful and gave the story a good dose of quirkiness and weirdness that added to the narrative.
The writing was confusing (in a good way) and set a tone that began with a man who was suffering both mentally and physically to one of acceptance and hope. The sadness and depression is evident in the story and a key part of the book but it wasn't overdone and I think the portal of mental illness is fairly well done. I had empathized a lot with Scott's struggles with his depression and understood where it was coming from despite that fantastical plot and the extremes of his pain and abuse.
