this book would be amazing for someone studying PURELY historic letters or kafka’s style of nonfiction writing. for fun, on the other hand? i wouldn’t recommend it. the only redeeming factor that occurs whilst reading this novel is that, every so often, kafka will conjure a thought that i’ve already had but word it more beautifully than i could ever. unfortunately for me, 98% of the time, it was just too mundane for me to get much joy from reading it in every other area. not the type of thing i would usually read, but i think i expected something else and what i expected just wasn’t what was delivered, so it was disappointing. always good to see other people’s introspection though, as trying to understand someone else’s way of thinking is good for you. i can thank these torturous letters for that at the very least. though, i will be honest when i say that milena’s essays at the end had me enthralled for a moment.
