I Am Not Myself These Days: A Memoir by Josh Kilmer-Purcell

dark funny inspiring reflective medium-paced

4.25

Normally, I strictly read fiction, but I read this for book club and this memoir right here is 👌🏾 I started this book just expecting drag queens and found an unexpectedly sweet and tender love story. This is not a happy story, though. There are issues with alcoholism, addiction and some violence so read with care.

P.S. Be aware that this book takes place in the 80s or 90s and was written in 2006. There were some scenes and language that made me uncomfortable and would absolutely not fly in present day. Also be aware that they used formerly common terms for the trans community that are now outdated.

TW: Alcoholism, drug use, sex work, incest (reference), physical assault, ableism (slurs), dubious consent, transphobia (slurs/outdated terminology), racism (Asian/Indigenous accent mocking/bits), addiction, fatphobia, domestic violence
