The writing in this book was magnificent, it was rich and superbly witty, bringing the characters and setting of Sicily to life in a remarkable way. Whilst I did definitely find the novel hard to get into due to the many different characters that we are introduced to and my lack of historical knowledge about Garibaldi, this was still an enticing read. It makes me desperately want to go to Sicily and see the place that the author describes so vividly.
