How We Named the Stars is so profound and vitally important to be consumed by marginalized communities. So many identities are SEEN in this book. Not to mention, the writing is absolutely beautiful and poetic. I just loved everything so much!

The main character, Daniel, starts college as a first generation college student at a prestigious New York university, across the country from his hometown. His roommate, Sam, is the complete opposite of Daniel. Sam is white, athletic, and outgoing; Daniel is a Mexican immigrant, shy, and anxious.

Daniel embarks on a year of self discovery with his sexuality which ultimately leads to first love, loss, and profound grief. Through an interconnected family connection, Daniel understands the true understanding of his namesake, who he is, and how to move on in life loving after grief.

I see some negative reviews about the timeline being inconsistent and the writing to be chaotic and to those people I say…this book is not made for you. Daniel is a 19 year old anxious college student questioning so many things about his life and that is so clearly reflected in the writing style. As for inconsistent timelines, this is not the case, you just need to actually the read the book to understand the intentionality of the notes written at the start of each chapter.

A phenomenal debut novel that deserves so much recognition; it has the power to heal so many.
