I felt like this was a modern day retelling of How a Lay Dying. The book is set in the 1990s in the worst parts of Florida and the saddest parts of Ohio. The characters are awful people who make terrible choices, but they are real – tragically, regretfully real. And the worse the story line got, the more I loved it. The main character struggles to dissociate life with her dysfunctional family and a more stable future elsewhere. Raymer’s book may be eye opening for anyone born into stability and perhaps empathetic to those who are not.
