Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

5.0

Wow. This was a great book. And an even greater story. If you do pick this up, I highly recommend the audiobook. It was narrated by Trevor Noah himself and he took the reading experience to a whole nother level.

I have to admit that due to the appaling education system in Latvia, I had never really learned about apartheid in South Africa. Which is why I’m double glad I decided to read this. I learned so much through this book. And so much of it are things I think every person should know. Arguably now more than ever with the Palestinian people suffering at the hands of an apartheid state, too.

Trevor covers such a wide range of topics in this book - everything from collonialism and apartheid to religion, education and family. It was as insightful, funny and inspiring as it was horrifying and tragic at times.

This memoir has definitely inspired me to read more non-fiction. Not sure why I previously thought that it wouldn’t really be for me… Fortunately, I was wrong!
