'Salem's Lot by Stephen King
5.0
10/10 audiobook, would recommend. The first 40% or so is good but not great, but then the book really picks up. I wanted to listen to it constantly, and then I procrastinated the last 6% because I didn't want it to be over.
King, as usual, masterfully develops his characters while also keeping the plot moving. I found myself slipping into really knowing and liking the characters without even realizing that I'm becoming attached to them. And the way he writes about evil - my god, it's good. It's beautiful and haunting; it takes one of the oldest themes in human storytelling and makes it seem new, makes me truly believe in the horribleness of the evils he depicts in a way I rarely experience in fantasy-like books. I hung onto every word of his descriptions and could vividly picture his scenes. And he weaves so much emotional nuance to horror: there's the terror, yes, but also deep sadness and amazement.
