Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman

4.0

Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman is a chilling tale seen through the innocent eyes of Bela, a young girl whose perspective adds a unique layer of depth to the story. What starts as a seemingly ordinary home soon reveals a more sinister presence. As strange, inexplicable incidents occur, the characters’ grip on reality begins to unravel, creating a terrifying and mesmerizing descent into fear, paranoia, and the fragile boundary between the known and unknown.

One of the most unsettling elements is Bela's "imaginary" friend, Other Mommy—except she might not be imaginary and doesn’t feel like a friend. The eerie ambiguity of Other Mommy's true nature left me in constant dread, unsure of what was real and what wasn’t.

This book gave me legitimate chills! I’ve never read a story from a child's perspective like this, and it made the creepiness all the more effective. The story dives into unsettling moments, keeping me on edge from start to finish. Malerman’s vivid writing had me not only seeing but almost feeling the terror unfold within Bela's home.
