The Changeling by Joy Williams

5.0

Someone on the NYC subway was carrying an Elliot Bay Book Company tote-bag, so I sought out the shop while in Seattle. I pulled a shapeshifter tarot card the day before so I chose this book from a few others that looked tempting.

The enchantment continued with the intro by Karen Russell: “readers... may be surprised to feel a primordial déjà vu; a tingling where their own antlers might have been, once upon a time”

What a haunting book this turned out to be! Is it postpartum depression, PTSD or all the gin she’s drinking that distorts the perception of narrator and main character, Pearl? Her voice as a storyteller sounds amplified or even echoing, as if she were out alone in the wilderness at night with terrifying things lurking in the shadows.

“Somewhere is your animal, and it is important that you know him, that you know how to reach him, or you will be nothing. You will always be afraid. You will have nowhere to rest and be safe.”.
