Beautiful Darkness by Margaret Stohl, Kami Garcia

3.0

Beautiful Darkness was an alright follow-up to the first book in the series.

There was a lot of action that kept the story moving; something was always happening. Whenever I thought the group was doomed, some impossible person magically appeared and intervened. When it came to those moments, I’m not sure how I felt about it, the group being magically saved, but hey, it’s a fantasy novel.

I’m not sure how I feel about the characters developing in the series, despite the obvious physical changing and discovering their titles in the Caster world. I think the one I’m most happy about is Ridley. She went from a Dark Caster in the first book to showing that she actually does care about Lena, and then having to cope with becoming Mortal. All of the other characters honestly seem the same. Ethan is still trying to chase a girl that’s almost impossible to catch; Lena is still afraid of herself and what’s to come; Link is still along for the ride. Not much else really changes significantly.

Again, the action in the novel made it an easy read. This one felt better paced; it wasn't too slow, but didn't go by so fast that I had no idea what was happening.

This book especially wasn't a deep, fantastic work of literature. But having the different world right beneath our own, the appeal of a different world to lose ourselves in makes it such an addicting read. The novel is great in that it has a love story in it, but it doesn't feel like the whole plot revolves around that single love. The series makes you want to keep reading so you keep learning about this fantastically frightening world that Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl created.

I enjoyed the book, but I prefer the first novel. Onto book three!
