I haven't read the other Atlee Pine books. I got this one during vacation and finally got to read it. Even though it's the last book of the Atlee Pine series, it wasn't necessary to read the other books to understand the story. The first few pages felt like a massive information dump in my opinion. Apart from that, it was manageable. The book is about FBI special agent Atlee Pine trying to find her long-lost twin sister Mercy who got kidnapped when they were 6 years old. The story unfolds chronologically through several POVs and is very woman-centered. The chapters were quite short, which felt annoying and unnecessary.
Peter, the antagonist, is very condescending towards women, which was evident from how he reacted to his brother Ken mistreating his girlfriend. He comes across as a gentleman, but that was all an act. It was a surprise that he trusted Britt Spencer to do his dirty work. Double the joy when she decided to double-cross him!
I mean, I get that he wanted to get revenge for what Mercy did to his brother and what the government did to his father. But I strongly believe in supporting what's right and not just supporting family just because they're family. So I found it hard to feel any sympathy for him, except for him being brainwashed by his parents.
The ending was very exciting and ingenious even!
