THIS BOOK
God, this book.
I've loved Alice Oseman's writing for a long time, but this is the first time I've read one of their novels beyond Heartstopper. I liked Aled's character in the graphic novels, but I fell head-over-heels in love with him in this. He's not the main character, but he's incredibly well-written and I can't believe how much he made me feel throughout this book. Frances is our main character and she is so fucking relatable. Her feelings that she is defined by how well she does in school reminded me so much of how I felt in high school and continue to sometimes feel in college. It's a testament to how well Oseman writes teenage characters that these people sound like kids but never sound stupidly young. They make mistakes, but they're also so genuine and care so much about the friends they have chosen.
I think that this is the book of Oseman's that has made me feel the most things. I cried, I screamed, I laughed. It was so so good and really dark at times but it also made me feel so much hope for both me and the people around me overcoming their trauma and their pain and getting to become better, freer people because of it. (Also I've never hated a character more than I hate Carol Last. Fuck Carol Last. She knows what she did.)
If you like Alice Oseman, read this. If you haven't read Alice Oseman before, read this. TBH, I don't really care who you are, you should probably read this. It's incredible and you won't regret it.
