The Ruby Circle by Richelle Mead

3.0

Okay I'm going to give an overview of the entire series.

I came in not really expecting a lot because I know how Richelle writes and Vampire Academy was one of my all time fave series of hers. I didn't jump into Bloodlines right away because I couldn't get pull into this part of the vampire academy world yet. I was still too into Rose's story and all of the gang that was involved along side her.

So when tumblr hyped up Bloodlines and Sydrian I thought it's about time I check out this series and their beloved otp. I have let Vampire Academy sit for a while now so I thought why not.

The first three book made me love Bloodlines so so much. And I kept asking myself why I didn't start this sooner right after Vampire Academy. I love Sydrian more than I thought I would, their forbidden romance was fun, sexy and just want I wanted in a YA series. They understood each other, they talk, they hang out, they fight. They have a normal, progressive, good relationship (it is nowhere near perfect but that's what so great about them).

Bloodlines also made me understood Sydney as a character more. She is driven, strong willed, brave, loyal and such a grey character. I love my grey characters and Sydney found herself questioning a lot of what is wrong and what is right.

Then Mead did the unpredictable and made me like Adrian a whole lot who did not appeal to me at all in Vampire Academy because all I could see is a drunk mess who parties too much and drink himself into oblivion.

Book four was when it started going downhill for me. Sydrian was so caught up in each other, it was exactly what I was afraid of once Mead decided to put them together. Throw away the pining and the long glances and you now have the new couple all lovey dovey with each other. It was cute. It was sexy and I totally understand why. They're in the honeymoon stage of the relationship, they're in love, it's new, it's fresh, they're young. So I went along and let Sydrian did their thing. Book four also introduce a new voice to the series when Mead decided to add Adrian's point of view to the mix. There was something off about his narration that I didn't really like but I was fine with it, it didn't bother me too much. I just found myself preferring Sydney's pov more.

Book five happened and that was when I was done. What pisses me off was Adrian's regression as a character in book five. He spent half the book- probably even more than that doing what Adrian usually does and that was party, drink, don't listen to other people and whine when he couldn't get what he wanted. You would think after everything he been through this wouldn't happen again and that he would be able to pull himself together but nope, not at all.

The new secondary characters in Book four wasn't interesting and easily forgettable. I wanted to see more of Jill, Trey, Eddie and the rest of the gang. I missed their group dynamic.

Mead killed it in the last three books because of two things. First the plot, I have no idea where she was going with it but it sure as hell wasn't what I expected. Second the romance. I love romance as much as the next person does but there is a point where enough is enough. Where too much is unbearable. I rather have an author give me less romance so I can thirst over it and savor it, instead of getting sick and tired of it.

Sydrian was great in the first three books, individually and together. Sydney lifted Adrian up in a way that no one else can. And Adrian help her see the world in a fresh, new perspective. But the last three books killed it when they can no longer do it alone. I thought what was so great about them at the beginning was that they were able to count on themselves and each other, but as the story progressed they think that they can't do anything without the other person and that to me is not healthy at all. Seventeen year old me would have bought it but twenty-one year old me doesn't. So I ended up skimming book five and reading book six for characters like Jill, Eddie, Rose, Christian, Lissa etc. because when Sydrian lose themselves so much in each other, I found myself losing interest in their story completely.
