Walker Montgomery has spent the last fifteen years trying to avoid his grandmother and her friend’s annual Great Bachelor Competition, a contest that is designed to marry off the eligible men of Indigo, Alaska. That was before Sloan McKinley rolled into town from New York City to help her best friend Grier settle her late father’s estate. Sloan is a burst of pure energy and easily wins over the locals of Indigo, especially the grandmothers in charge of the Competition. Sloan has decided to use her time in Alaska as an opportunity to write an article for a travel magazine and she soon finds herself falling in love with this small town of eight hundred people. When Sloan and Walker both agree to enter the competition together as a bet they soon find themselves fighting to win not only the competition but each other.
Baby it’s Cold Outside is the first book in Addison Fox’s Alaskan Nights series and it’s the first book that I have ever read by her. Let me start by saying that I am hooked on this series and I need the next book RIGHT NOW. It has been a very long time since I have finished a book and been desperate to find out what happens in the next book but that’s what happened at the end of BICO. Mrs. Fox does a great job of setting up future books and telling three different love stories at one time and making sure the reader has an investment in all of the characters not just the hero and heroine.
I love Sloan and I especially love the relationship that she has with her best girlfriends Grier and Avery. The girl talk between the three is hilarious and is very realistic of how I talk with my girlfriends which makes it very easy to believe in the plot and the characters. There are a lot of fun characters in Indigo, Alaska and because of them and all of their quirky ways is a major reason that I can’t wait to revisit this series. There is one relationship that involves two of the town folks that I really hope gets written about more, if not gets it’s own book.
Sloan and Walker’s relationship is very cute but a few times I did get annoyed with Walker. He seemed to have a black cloud over his head for a while and he had no intention to get rid of it even when a wonderful girl like Sloan comes into his life. This was the only problem that I had with the entire book and the only reason I didn’t give it an A. The chemistry between all of the couples is very steamy without being too much which is a nice break from a lot of romance books that I’ve read lately.
The Great Bachelor Competition makes this book so fun. The lengths that the town will go to in the name of love and how much everyone seems to want it is very touching. I really enjoyed how Mrs. Fox talked about loneliness and how much it can touch everyone and how everyone needs and wants a chance to find someone to share their life with. The fact that there is a town whose whole mantra is based on love was very touching and wonderful.
I really loved this book. I think it is such a fun, easy read but it also has a lot of layers and depth to it. I loved all of the characters and cannot wait to read the next book in this series and I plan on reading all of Mrs. Fox’s other books because she has made a fan out of me.
