This book emotionally ruined me… multiple times… and I am NOT okay. While the first 100ish pages of this book were quite slow, I almost welcomed the reprieve after the stress of the first book. I loved watching the relationship between Celaena and Chaol develop (as frustrating as it was), and watching as Celaena as she tried to juggle her conscience, loyalties, and feelings (and also I know this is YA but the lack of spice in this book was soooo disappointing, SJM just SKIPPED all the good parts and it was so sad, but understandable for the genre). I enjoyed learning more about the world and its history, and I am so intrigued about the magic we are starting to learn more about. Once this book picked up the pace, it REALLY picked up, and I found myself so invested and unable to put it down. There were so many twists and turns, so much betrayal and intrigue, politics and strategy, love and hatred, and it was just incredible. There were plenty of points where I gasped out loud, had to put my book down, and had to stop myself from launching it across the room in shock and frustration. Celaena is such a badass female protagonist who deserves so much more than the hand she had been dealt, and I am so excited to keep following her journey. I am salty with SJM for some things (if you have read this you’ll probably know), but @_booksanddogs_ assured me that it all happens for a reason and that is the only hope I am currently holding onto. If you can push through the first little bit of this book, you definitely will not be disappointed.
