I wish I'd read these as a teenager, I would have ATE THEM UP. As a 27 year old, I appreciate the world building and found the Greek god stuff interesting (and a little confusing). The writing style took a while to get used to, as it's a middle grade and I rarely read any younger reader books, but that's not the books fault, that's just me! I thought the main character (and Annabeth) acted a lot older than 12. I was still playing with Polly Pockets at that age! It made me understand why the films aged him up a few years. Looking forward to the series, because I think it will have more of the scenes from the book in it.
