Artificial Condition by Martha Wells

5.0

Artificial Condition is the second novella in the Murderbot Diaries, and it picks up right after the first story leaves off. Despite being a relatively brief read, it's an excellent story that manages to establish new, full-bodied characters in orbit around the protagonist, one of them in particular proving quite endearing. The protagonist itself is also carefully crafted, with a personality all its own.

The plot, like in the first novella, is briskly paced, especially in the second and third acts. The story manages to both create a fun little story arc while also trying to resolve some of the larger questions hovering over the main character and its past. The ending is a
Spoilernod to the classic wandering hero, who interacts for but a brief moment with the cast in front of them before leaving them to continue the journey alone
. I look forward to what lies ahead for the Murderbot.

Overall, a solid 4.5 stars.
