I didn't know about the existence of this series until one of my fifth graders showed it to me. And after reading two of them I can say, "why didn't they have this kinds of books when I was in middle school?" I remember the books I had to read, they were boring as hell, un interesting to the mind of a kid. These books however are very much in tune with what students are thinking (or what grown ups thing they are thinking) which is sort of a selfish/self absorbed/kind heart vision of things that lends itself to some light comedy.
