To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

2.0

Well this was one of those books that I was forced to read in high school. I never really did back then because I didn't like reading at that point and I hated being told what to read.

Anyways, now that I love to read I decided I really wanted to dig into the classics that I've never read in addition to the more modern books that I prefer.

Well, I cannot for the life of me figure out why this has such a high rating and why everyone loves it so much. I read all the way through, but most of the book is such a drag. I guess what it comes down to is that I have a real problem with books that have no purpose, plot, or climax. Sure, this book has some great lessons about acceptance and the prejudices that exist around us. But, this is essentially the day to day life of a young girl. Not much happens. It has it's funny moments, and a few exciting moments, but mostly it's very dry and hard to get through.

Things I did like were, like I said above, the lessons it had in it, the few funny moments, and also the last few pages were pretty exciting. I also really liked the characters and really felt for them in many areas of the book. But it seems like it had really no climax or plot and a lot of it was just unnecessary.

Anyways, I know how I feel isn't the general consensus. Maybe it's just not the style of book that I like, but to me, this was not very great at all.
