Alias Anna: How a Girl and Her Music Outwitted the Nazis by Susan Hood, Greg Dawson

challenging dark informative sad medium-paced

4.0

This middle grade WWII novel in verse pulls no punches. It is often brutally honest about the atrocities committed by both the Soviet government and the Nazis against the Jewish people who were caught in between the two regimes. I think that the focus on Ukraine and its history during this time will be interesting to readers who have heard a lot about Ukraine's recent war in the news. I thought it was interesting how this book was not written purely in free verse, but experimented with several different styles of poetry for certain poems, which are identified and explained in the back matter--which makes this a good teaching tool as well. Highly recommend.
