Chouette by Claire Oshetsky

5.0

Emotionally gripping. Elicits both sympathy for, and abject horror of, the narrator's struggles against a dog-world that cannot accept her daughter. At times, it feels like the unreliable narrator is dragging you along her path of half-delusions by the scalp. Though this book principally explores motherhood bent to its extremes, Oshetsky also probes at gender, guilt, doubt, capability, trauma, and responsibility with stupefying clarity. Strongly recommend for readers who enjoyed The Yellow Wallpaper or Piranesi.
