The Flash Vol. 3: Rogues Reloaded (Rebirth) by Joshua Williamson

I looooved this volume of The Flash! What’s best than Flash and his beloved Rogues ?!
I was really happy to read about the famous Rogues again. They are my favorite villain from The Flash comics. The relationship between their team and Barry Allen is just too good not to enjoy one more time! And what a story! I loved every part of it, the outcomes, the investigations and the development of the storytelling has the right pace. Not too fast that you get lost in some part, the right amount of details and backstories when needed. There is a true effort on the captions, maybe a little bit too much. Though, it is not a real bother as they give some complementary additions to the content if you don’t remember some events. They were a true support to the story and were, I will dare to say, an indispensable tool to accompany the visual story. The visual storytelling is perfect! The character development and plot are intriguing and gives you a hard-to-put-down entertaining reading experience. Yes, I wanted to finish my comic before eating my pizza! So yeah entertaining enough haha!
I have to talk about the feelings this volume gave me. First, the Rogues Reloaded arc story was great, good, bref you see where I’m going with that one. I loved the fact that the writer went deeper than the chase-action-fight-win scheme of work. The story touched a stronger existing part of the story, the relationships between the different characters and last but not least, between the good and the bad. I appreciated the depiction of Flash as someone not pig headed into seeing the world and villains as big bad and not capable of being more human. He sees the world in gray, especially with the Rogues: Captain Cold and Heatwave. Moreover, Williamson manages to create a mix of good plot and humor when the time is right. The Rogues always have this little je ne sais quoi in order to make a battle scene more interesting and engaging. And in this volume the battles are game ON!
Which leads me to the art. I have to mention how beautiful the artwork is in Rogues Reloaded. Well, it is gorgeous in a lot of Flash comics, but I have to make an illusion to Di Giandomenico and Googe (for Agent of Black Hole arc). Artistically it is colorful, the pencil work is not my favorite style especially for the face of the character but some grids deliver a great result. What I admire the most thanks to Di Giandomenico’s talents is how he shifted the Flash. His artistic choice of breaking the border in some pages was a very good choice. Why? Simple answer: this effect manages to highlight Flash’s speed force. and oh boy it is a success!! I loved it! It’s almost as if you can join the dot to find where Barry is going to be in the next panel. You just have to follow the crackling yellow speed force on every page. It’s a nice detail. This way you feel Barry in movement, not only thanks to his body position but also because of the little, long and omnipresent little lightnings around him. In my opinion, it made the visual reading experience richer.
Two things worth mentioning are the colors and the battle scenes with Mirror Master. First, for the colors they gave an optimistic vibe but at the same time it is contrasted by the decor, darkening little by little according to the emotion displayed by the characters. Secondly, the battle scenes. Yeah, for that I expected the artist to be creative and make a good use of Mirror Master’s power, and it delivered!! The scenes were gorgeous!!
To sum up, this volume is really entertaining and has a powerful and moving arc story. The writing and the art are well done, complementing each other as smoothly as possible. They make the reading experience very enjoyable.
