Alice in Deadland by Mainak Dhar

2.0

The premise was interesting: Alice in Wonderland with a zombie twist. In execution it lacks 'bite'.

A lot of the characters feel flat. The links to Alice in Wonderland are also kind of tenuous. I thought it might be a parallel, but basically it's about a blonde girl named Alice who follows a bunny ear wearing zombie down a hole. There are a few shout-outs to AIW, but they are fairly minor.

The prose is very straightforward, which some people might like. To me it is a bit like reading a report; telling vs. showing and all that. I feel like there could be so much done to describe the wastelands that Delhi have become. Playing up the descriptions of a foreign setting ruined and twisted by warfare and zombies would do much for the immersion of the book. The idea of a post-apocalyptic foreign land is intriguing, so I think there could have been more to say about the surroundings.

I will say that the ending was a bit of a surprise. I just feel like the book overall is so-so; it could be very good with some improvements.

The ebook is/was 99 cents on Amazon, so for people who really enjoy zombie novels, the price of admission is not prohibitive.
