Slower with overall less character development than A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Smith’s first novel was so wonderfully insightful and I had high hopes this would be equally engaging, but it fell short by comparison. It’s a very real book, not “pretty” in the least; I often found myself frustrated at the characters’ behavior. If you’re looking for a feel good novel, look elsewhere. If you’re looking for a human story and a bit of social history, this is an interesting read.
