City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

3.0

The Mortal Instruments is one of those rare examples where the Hollywood version outshines the book. Not the movie, that is, but the new(ish) TV show on Freeform.

I find myself caring so much more for the characters as portrayed by the actors than from the page. Almost all of the problems the characters face could be resolved by FUCKING TALKING TO EACH OTHER, which is my biggest pet peeve as far as plot goes, and it only gets more and more convoluted, almost for the sake of being Edgy. The pacing of the book is strange and hard to pin down.

It's not the worst thing I've ever read. The premise is very interesting, and there are moments where the characters shine. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be finishing the series (4-6) or reading any of her other works based on what I've come to expect from the first three.
