We Wait for the Sun by Katie McCabe

I found this book from the 2022 Coretta Scott King award list.  Wow!!!  What artwork.  This just blew me away.  It should have been a Newberry Honor book at the least.

The book starts off in the wee early hours of the morning.  The blues and purple create the atmosphere of mystery.  The women are in the woods walking.  The colors are amazing.  They go berry picking - blackberry picking.  Then the sun begins to rise and each page the colors swirl an change as the sun gets higher.  It is a brilliant piece of artwork.  Stunning!

The story is sweet, between a grandmother instilling a sense or pride in her granddaughter giving her time.  A beautiful story.

The end has two pages of facts and histories about this person.  Dovey Johnson Roundtree was a huge freedom fighter and lawyer during the civil rights era.  She was a force for change.  The author speaks to this moment being so important to Dovey as a child and helping her to be who she became.

Again, I learned something very cool from a picture book.  I never heard of Dovey before, I'll admit and now I have.  It's a cool story.   It has the mysteries of life in it.
