Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History by S.C. Gwynne

2.0

Had a very white-centric view, for example using words like “progress” and “(de)population” always from the white perspective (for more on this, I recommend Googling the review by Peter d’Errico.) Despite the author’s efforts to be objective, it felt very much written from a white gaze. Why doesn’t the author include even a single interview or review from a living indigenous person or descendant? Their perspective is completely missing from the book. If the author had just hired an indigenous editor or sensitivity reader, this book could have been much improved. On the plus side, I did gain a much better understanding of the timeline of the events of that period.
