I ended up absolutely loving Kushiel’s Dart, and I can easily see this becoming one of my favorite series. For me, it had the perfect balance of focus on smaller, personal events (including relationships) and bigger world events for an epic fantasy. I loved following a protagonist who was deeply flawed but actually smart. (I hate when characters fail to catch on to very obvious answers and solutions.) It was delightful to encounter so many strong and nuanced women in the book and to see a society that, despite its many problems, is sex positive and sees bisexuality as typical. If you’re looking for a new epic fantasy trilogy to start, I absolutely recommend Kushiel’s Dart. Just beware of the content warnings (see below).
