The Last True Poets of the Sea by Julia Drake

5.0

‪First coming-of-age I’ve read in a while and it didn’t disappoint. Gorgeous, subtle writing that I absolutely adored reading. The journey Violet goes through feels natural, and I enjoyed how Drake wasn’t afraid to write a main character with flaws. The relationships felt very real, especially between Violet and her brother - that actually hit quite close to home, which is what pushed this to a 5 star for me. There is a certain nuance to Drake’s writing of Violet that was so human and I can’t quite put into words how well crafted it was.

This book was pitched to me as simply a f/f book, but it was so much more than that, and it was refreshing to see a f/f romance within a coming of age novel without it having to be the central narrative. Will definitely pick up future projects from Drake. ‬
