Lara is an orphan who sustains herself by toshing, that is scouring the sewers of Kings Haven for valuables which have been lost or flushed away and selling them to the slums’ favourite Pawn Broker, Old Han. When stories arise of an evil lurking in the sewers that kills toshers for their treasure and a white witch escapes the gallows after disobeying the king’s high witch, Lara and her friend Joe are drawn into dangerous circles ultimately leading them to a life quite unlike anything they had expected.

This YA fiction is filled with witches, monsters, magic and legend but ultimately is a story about found family and the friendship therein. It’s a little scary for younger readers ( there’s a scene not dissimilar from No-Face’s bathhouse rampage which is really rather upsetting) but for tweens and teens it’s just a beautiful magical adventure with a female protagonist who doubts herself but pushes on regardless. I read it in three sittings and really enjoyed
