Very much a character-driven book but the main character(s) struck me as tedious and self-absorbed, there isn't any character development, and the central "love" story was nothing more than a lust story.
The narrator clearly doesn't either like or respect the woman she apparently "loves" and they never really connect or open up to each other on any level beyond the physical.
This all made it difficult to care about anything that happened. I wished the book was about the housemistress; a minor character who was much more interesting and sympathetic than either of the main characters.
