Lovely War by Julie Berry
5.0
genuinely i think this is the purest portrayal of love and humanity i’ve ever read. it was so raw and genuine, i felt like i was there experiencing everything they were experiencing. all the uncertainty and fear and the hardships and the pain and grief and guilt, i felt it all as if it were happening to me and it was so beautiful and painful at the same time. the characters were so very vivid and their love was so true and honest, you couldn’t help but love them and hope with every turning page that they would be okay.
the way this book portrayed just how beautiful humanity can be & how kind people can be all while taking place during a war, showcasing truly horrible and atrocious events. how it showcased the cruel acts and impacts of war on people and then also the racism raced by black soldiers during the war, how they were subjected to cruelty & prejudice by those they were meant to be fighting alongside. and how they were overlooked and exploited, with their bravery and honorable acts being seen as disgraceful and a crime against the american— white— people, when they should have been treated as heroes just as everyone else.
and how all of that was juxtaposed by the true and honest kindness of love and how powerful it can be to have hope, to have people to hold onto and to fight for. how even with all the cruelty in our world, and all the horrors we may see, there are always people out there who are kind and true, who will hold us up when we’re are to weak to hold ourselves. like not to be corny but love and community and compassion and kindness are the things that keep us alive, they are what we’re here for and i think it’s so beautiful to showcase that even in the darkest of tunnels there is still light.
“the most ordinary mortal bodies are housed by spectacular souls.” not doing well.
