On paper, there's absolutely nothing wrong with this novel, the first in the Will Trent series. I can see why it's held its audience and is so popular. In fact, I label this under the "It came to me at the wrong time," category. Why?
It's unrelentingly bleak, hard and with never even a glimmer of hope or happiness.
Excruciatingly detailed with fully-fleshed out characters (and then some, honestly) and a blindsiding twisty and clever plot, I should have enjoyed this more. I simply felt myself, my mood dragged down while reading it. It will be worth a second venture when I'm more mentally prepared for the type of material.
