Cunt: A Declaration of Independence by Inga Muscio

4.0

While portions the radfem rhetoric definitely made me uncomfortable (to say the least -- I found many portions simply too angry to read closely), Muscio brings up good points about the way women's bodies have been objectified, medicalized, and pitted against one another (at least in American society). I'm uncomfortable with her statement that "all" women have cunts, since this isn't true for all women -- and it disregards the experiences of trans people. I was put off by the level of mysticism that takes up the middle portion of the book, and by the ableist comments that are scattered throughout the book, but particularly in the first half.

Muscio, in this edition, has an afterword that seems to apologize for the transmysoginistic comments, and speaks to the fact that men are also raped). This is something. I'm not sure it's enough -- she had the opportunity to create an updated edition if she had the opportunity to create an afterword (though how much freedom she and her publisher negotiated for updates is hard to say) and that means there was the opportunity to rethink how she wanted to approach the inclusion of transgendered folks, of people who identify outside the gender bianary, etc.
