Catfish in the Cradle by Wile E. Young

3.0

Southern Gothic meets Lovecraftian fiction in CATFISH IN THE CRADLE, an unlikely horror story that takes place in the swamps of East Texas. Author Wile Young's vivid imagination and gift for story premises is on display here. It is rife with authentic sense of place and true to life characters.

The story is inventive. I'm not the biggest fan of Lovecraftian (I've over indulged myself on it nearly as much as I have on zombies.) But the unexpected local of Deep Ones coupled with Young's own east Texas upbringing make the story enjoyable and real. There are some technical flaws within the story (continuity and over used punctuation) but they can be overlooked because the story itself pulls you through the book like a trolling motor.

This is a freshman effort to be sure. You have to forgive the rough edges and enjoy the story. There is no doubt Wile Young is a great storyteller. I can't wait to see more from him and watch him progress.
