The Grand Ruin: Lance & Scarlet, Part One by J.C. Hawke

5.0

This is one of my most anticipated reads of this year as Elliot Montgomery is my favourite book man of all time so I had such high expectations and I could not wait to be back in their world again.

The prologue immediately had me hooked and my heart was already cracking.

Lance and Scarlett we have met before and told on the same timeline as Mason and Nina’s relationship developing I found myself loving these characters from their first meeting. Little did we know that Lance fell hard and fast for Scarlett and she's a clever cookie who had me laughing out loud with her antics.

Being told in dual POV we are given the opportunity to see Lance's sensitive feelings and this is where Jess excels, you hear and experience what the character thinks and feels and it's just an amazing reading experience.

Lance is a complicated character, he does not understand that he is loveable and how to love and so has built walls around himself to protect himself. (No wonder - IFKYK ! ) His family is Mason, Elliot and their friends where he can be himself. What he did not expect was that Scarlett would love him for who he is. Who wouldn’t ???

Scarlett craves the love of her brother and has a lot on her shoulders which means she spends a lot of time at home. She is lonely and has put her life dreams on hold for the moment.
She opens herself up to Lance and finds exactly what she needs - love, safety and the future that she wants.

This is the first in a duet and by the end of this one, my heart which was cracking at the start was now breaking as the story developed. It has left me bereft so I can do nothing but wait until the second book is released.

Jess has written again another stonker of a romance with so much depth, so many special characters and so many heart-breaking themes that this book is again one I will not forget for a long, long time.
Its up at the top of the stratosphere of romance books.

P.S. Elliot still remains my No 1♥️
