The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi

4.0

Four enthusiastic stars because of the long history I have with this book. Charlotte Doyle was the improbable heroine of my middle school dreams. The idea of throwing off a mundane, privileged existence in order to embrace adventure and justice simply thrilled me.

At some point it was brought to my attention that this book is occasionally used by teachers to illustrate an "unreliable narrator." This revelation briefly burst my bubble, but I'm over it, and Charlotte has reemerged as one of my all-time favorite heroines, largely due to her improbability.
