World Engines: Destroyer by Stephen Baxter

2.0

On the verge of DNF for me. The bad: the dialogue and character building is dreadful, and the main character is incredibly unsympathetic. He's supposed to be charismatic but all he does is make an ass of himself and cut off people who are trying to explain things to him. And the book's about 2x as long as it needs to be, with a huge amount of beating about the bush when it comes to explanation vis dialog. The good: the worldbuilding and future society was interesting (and the mystery was the only thing keeping me reading). Bonus points because the author referenced a bunch of papers in the afterword to show that the future tech he was using was at least theoretically viable. Would not read the next book.
