Come Out, Come Out by Natalie C. Parker

5.0

This book should be a required reading in English classes. The messages about the horrors of homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, and trauma within the LGBTQIA+ community were haunting because of how real the experiences portrayed are. I thought it was powerful for this story to take place in Washington State. Washington is a blue state and, while I think our society has otherwise accepted conversion therapy stories coming out of southern states, trauma in LGBTQIA+ youth can be overlooked in more liberal states. To see the cruelty of parents was especially horrific but it was beautiful to see Fern and Jaq overcome those obstacles trying to force them not to be themselves. Seriously, read this story.
