The Sandman Vol. 4: Season of Mists by Neil Gaiman

5.0

So this is pretty much my favorite Sandman arc. Like, ever. But it was hard rereading it for I think a sixth or seventh time, because I'm so intensely familiar with the story at this point. Like, down to specific beats (like The Cluracan's icky child-boyfriend, even though he's actually probably an immortal, Thor hitting on Bast and generally being hilarious, the first really original horror in the Dead Boys story). But it's so good for so many reasons. Even though Kelley Jones's art is vaguely ill-suited at times (sometimes he just can't illustrate what's actually going on because he needs to throw another jar of ink at the page), Gaiman's writing is at the top of his game by creating characters and acquiring mythologies and making them his own in a way that probably won't be done again until The Wake (in Sandman) or possibly even American Gods, and he makes everybody uniquely themselves. Plus, the chapter opener all done from Nuala's point of view is something I'd forgotten about, and is decidedly wonderful.
