I'm a nerd. Most of my friends are nerds of one flavor or another. What I'm saying is, I know nerds. It is true that many nerds are socially awkward, part of the cause and effect circle of a subculture on the margins. Two years ago, I met an adorable dude at a game night who was wearing stone-washed jeans and a wolf t-shirt, and he lifted his hat and said, "Ma'am" when I introduced myself. Fine.

However...

Are you kidding me with this guy? Okay, nerd with gorgeous body? Yup, fine, been there. That was a good couple of months. Nerd who is a bit awkward about hitting on potential romantic and/or sexual partners? Absolutely. Too many to list. Nerd who says dorky things? Don't get me started.

But a nerd who responds to a mass accusation against him of multiple murders by saying blandly, "Don't hate me cuz you ain't me"? Ok, well, fine, maybe. Not much is off the table for my people when we get into an awkward contest. Still, though, it's a stretch. That line of dialogue was the nail in the coffin for me with respect to Det. Cumberbatch's character. He was like an emotionless puppet built by someone who didn't actually understand who he was, and it kept pushing me out of the narrative. This line jangled so badly for me that it has popped into my mind on occasion even over a week later. It's a shame, really, because the basic idea for the character was a good one.

All that having been said, I was still quite enjoying the series at this point. That was just a rough area for me.
