LaRose by Louise Erdrich

4.0

Listening to Louise Erdrich read her novel LaRose was wonderful. She knows her characters and infuses her reading with their feelings and their personalities.

This is not an easy tale, but it is captivating and compelling, exploring a number of issues from the Native American experience in the US - alcoholism and addiction, boarding schools to assimilate children in the mid-1900s, the survival of traditions - while touching on other pertinent societal aspects - PTSD, Catholicism and the priesthood, the abandonment of children, how family is defined and understood.
