Archangel's Legion by Nalini Singh

My recap:
War Begins. Love is Tested.
It's the Cascade, a confluence of time and events that leads to a a surge of power in the archangel Cadre. All of the archangels will grow in strength, and some will be touched with madness. War is all but inevitable.
In New York, angels are dropping from the sky and casualties are high. Vampires, normally immune to illness, are dying of a highly contagious disease.
An insidious war against Archangel Raphael and his city has begun. But who is behind it? And how can Raphael and Guild Hunter Elena fight an unknown enemy?
And what is the consequence of the mysterious change that Raphael is undergoing?
My thoughts:
Archangel's Legion includes mystery, suspense, death, and war. But for me, the overriding story arc is the love story between Raphael and Elena. Everything—from their working together to keep New York calm after the Falling to their actions in the end—serves to strengthen their love for each other. All isn't wine and roses. They face serious challenges and threats to their relationship. But even the difficulties make them stronger. Raphael is scary-powerful in this book, and yet he also shines as a lover. Here are some of his sigh-worthy quotes about Elena:
"…he knew he'd damn his own honor and take vengeance on the world should anyone dare lay a finger on her."
"Eternity would mean nothing without you." (Raphael to Elena)
"For no power on earth would I trade my Elena."
Elena is kick-butt, as always. She fights for New York, she fights for the Guild, and she fights for Raphael—literally and figuratively. More than ever, in this book she is the humanizing, compassionate face of the Tower. Her problems with celebrity are hilarious. I want the T-shirt.
Illium, as usual, is irreverent and irrepressible. He's also heroic. Nalini seems to be readying him and Aodhan for their own books.
The meaning of the book's title is a surprise that I won't reveal. It will be interesting to see how that develops.
Archangel's Legion is a story of war, but is also a beautiful love story that will curl your toes and melt your heart.
Enjoy!
