The Nowhere Man by Gregg Hurwitz
3.0
I’d give this book 3.5 stars. Book #2 in the Nowhere Man saga. I do like the character of Evan Smoak who acts like a sort of avenger for those in trouble who can’t help themselves.
Having said that, this book did slip off the edge of credibility more than once.
Exhibit A: Why is it that all the power of the US government can’t seem to find Evan, but one private citizen manages to do so with seemingly little problem?
Exhibit B: Evan is helped to escape by a girl who hides—get this, a blooming metal car jack underneath her bathrobe 😳 “Don’t mind me, Mr. Guard, I just have a BABY KANGAROO underneath my robe. Let me in to see Mr. Smoak.” Seriously?
Exhibit C: Evan Smoak, an expert killer is allowed to walk freely around the compound because “it’s too cold and terrainy for him to escape.” I’m sorry, but if you’re trying to get 27 million from this guy, you ain’t going to let him wander around willy-nilly.
Exhibit D: Where, exactly, did Evan get 27 million dollars? The government assassin gig is much more lucrative than I imagined. Someone tell Jason Bourne.
Despite all this, the book managed to keep my interest and I ended up reading it in like three days. Hmm, in retrospect, what does that say about me?
