An interesting read, using backstory to move the personal and professional relationships of the two leads forward. Complex characters and solidly researched historical settings. PLUS, this:

THAT was swoonworthy! The ignorant insistence that the different (many mutually unintelligible) members of the Sinitic language family are "dialects" is wrongheaded and one of my major bêtes noires. So kudos to Ms Flynn for this.
