Whose Boat Is This Boat?: Comments That Don't Help in the Aftermath of a Hurricane by The Staff of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert

4.0

This isn’t a particularly long book and, though it is labeled a humor book on the back, there is nothing funny about this. Made up entirely of quotes from Pres. Trump during his visit to areas of the Carolinas devastated by Hurricane Florence in 2018. The words are callous and unthinking enough, but what really sells just how bad Pres. Trump’s attempts at empathy is the artwork. The artwork is pretty simple, even repetitive at times (honestly, I think they recycled a couple of bystanders on one or two pages), but cartoon Trump walks in and talks with the same uncaring braggadocio we’ve come to expect from the President. In one or two panels, his high ego is captured, but on nearly every page the look of devastation is palpable and the press corps’ shock and disbelief at what they are hearing is also evident. The artists did a good job of juxtaposing Trump with the devastation and the bystanders, but this is a very short book. Perhaps it was that way for cost and to make a point about how callous Pres. Trump’s words were. Still, I would’ve liked a little more. It may not be a particularly funny or enlightening book, which is the point, but consider getting a copy as all of the proceeds go to fund a disaster relief for the Carolinas.
