Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land

3.0

I have been putting off writing this review because I don't want to be too harsh! I think it's great that Land put pen to paper and got her story out there but I feel that her life was quite normal. We all struggle, we all fall down. We all have some family members that we would like to trade-in for new ones and we have all had shitty boyfriends. We all have to work hard to put food on the table and pay the bills.

I would have liked to see Land open up more about the abuse she suffered but I found there was just a lot of complaining about the hard work she did, how bad her body hurt, and how little time she got to spend with her daughter. It's hard to sympathize when I know so many people in the same type of situation. The best part of this story was Land's never-ending determination to do better in life and that's why I gave her the third star.

This novel was very repetitive to the point where I was skimming. Yes, there is a great message nestled into the pages of this book but it wasn't earth-changing for me at all. I can't say if I recommend it or not. It's an important story but I think it's one we all know because most of us are living it. It didn't live up to the hype for me.
