Goddess of Spring by P.C. Cast
5.0
We all know the story of Hades and Persephone and how she spends six months on the surface with the Gods and Goddesses on land (spring and summer) and the other six months in the Underworld with Hades (autumn and winter). Well this is a new and interesting take on that story.
Meet Lina, the owner of Pani Del Goddess a small bakery in Tulsa Oklahoma. A bakery that is doing less than stellar. Desperate for "divine inspiration" Lina starts searching for new recipes to showcase in her bakery. One cookbook she comes across is "The Italian Goddess Cookbook". In the cookbook she finds a recipe in it for a gourmet pizza that reads more like an invocation than a recipe but what the heck.
Demeter shows up and makes a deal with Lina. Take Persephone's place during the autumn and winter and allow Persephone to take her place back in Tulsa where she will breath new life into the bakery. The catch, besides the obvious six month term, bring spring to the underworld.
The story then starts to get interesting. Lina travels down to the underworld where she meets up with Hades who is well Hades. Ms. Cast plays him off as the handsome God that got the short end of the stick and is stuck in the underworld. He seems to not have any interest in anything. It is a great love story that keeps true to the original myth while still giving a fresh new perspective into the lives of Hades and Persephone.
