What an incredible book! On the face of it a right miserable story, with more death and suffering and misery than you would imagine could comfortably fit in 200 pages. Nevertheless, it is beautifully told and in a rather undefinable way much more positive than the plot would suggest. It has an exquisite attention to detail - any book that goes to the trouble of mentioning what species the plants are that they come across always wins my sympathy - and the slow pace does an amazing job of heightening the tension. The sense of place is also very well done. All in all an incredible book.
